Diagnostic tunnel infrastructure measurements using muon tomography

Geoptic’s application of novel instrumentation to infrastructure imaging is transforming remedial investigations in tunnels on the UK rail network. Using a method similar to that of an x-ray, Geoptic exploits naturally-occurring radiation for structural investigations. Importantly, the method is non-invasive, non-destructive and does not require physical contact with the infrastructure under investigation. In particular, the technique is able to successfully locate, characterise and monitor hidden voiding in the tunnel overburden. This presentation will introduce the muon tomography technique, summarise results to date on structural imaging and will discuss a number of other potential applications including mining and nuclear repositories.
