Current developments and innovations in TBM technology

The pressure on budgets and schedules for the construction of transport infrastructure, is increasing worldwide. Ambitious tunnelling projects are often key in these large-scale infrastructure projects. The tunnelling machines required have been developed step by step in recent years.  With a view to the technological trends and project challenges of the coming years, the latest innovations in the current generation of tunnelling machines are presented. The focus is on the current state-of-the-art and an outlook on the next expansion stage for pressurised TBMs – EPB shields, Mixshields, Variable Density, and TBMs for hard rock applications. In this context, the latest new developments in areas such as: Automation; Digitisation; Safety features; and Performance and efficiency enhancement solutions for tunnelling machines such as continuous advance and new shield control interfaces are presented.
