Low Carbon Sprayed Concrete – maximising the potential for carbon reduction.

An HS2 Innovation Team funded spraying trial has taken place demonstrating the potential of powdered calcium aluminate based accelerators to facilitate the substitution of 70% of the typical CEM I (Portland Cement) content with slag (GGBS), while meeting typical industry standard sprayed concrete lining (SCL) specification performance criteria and achieving a 60% reduction in embodied carbon. Summary trial results will be presented, along with a progress update on the development of the prototype trial equipment towards the goal of reliably conformant full-scale SCL production, while meeting the related requirements for a safe working environment in mined tunnelling works.
